More City & County Governments Offer Online Forums

More and more city and county governments are instituting online forums in conjunction with their government websites as a way to stay in touch with their residents. Communicating with boards and politicians is hard enough, why not make it easier for “the people” to reach out to their government. Here is an article that speaks about just such a thing happening for Vermilion County in the state of Illinois. Here is the link to the actual forum, small but growing.

New Forum Launched To Discuss Journalists During Times Of Crisis

The thought of war and terrorism are still on the forefront of many people’s minds. This is true of journalists and those concerned with getting access to the best information available, and making sure that people from every where have continued freedom to access this type of information. Sometimes people assume that the rest of the world is like America and that journalists every where have unfettered freedom to do their job, but this simply isn’t true.

In the spirit of this concern, the Council of Europe has launched an online forum for discussion about the rights of journalists and others to get information, especially during times of crisis.

This is another very good use of an online forum, to encourage people to share thoughts and concerns, and come up with new ideas about serious topics.

Australia’s Liberal Party Develops New Online Forum

This article details the Liberal Party’s plans to revamp their entire internet presence. The plan includes the development and launching of a new online forum along with other modern uses of the internet (like youtube, facebook, and webcams). It’s always nice to see newer forums coming online, no matter what their beliefs.

Online Forums Being Used In Legitimate Research Work

There has been a long standing computer rule when it comes to the information you read in an online forum, be very wary of it because anyone can say whatever they want… true or not. Here is an example of a major financial news article that cites customers reactions in online forums while analyzing the current financial markets. If a company/organization like this can use that info, why can’t you?

There is a lot that can be learned by reading through posts at quality online forums. Don’t get me wrong, there is still a bunch of junk that you have to wade through, but solid information is there. Apply it to marketing trends, use it to determine if a business opportunity has any legs, see a downturn in popularity in an issue or market before it hits the mainstream. Use forum discussion info to your advantage.

The FBI Uses Online Forum Creatively To Fight Crime

In a creative showing of high tech knowledge, the FBI has been using online forums to snare those guilty of crimes against children. The way it works is like this, the FBI goes to questionable online forums and posts hyperlinks to what is labeled as child pornography sites, the links in fact go to government sites that track where the users are logging on from. The FBI then raids the homes of those that were attempting to access the supposed child pornography sites. Let’s hope this method gets more of these perpetrators off the streets.

China Uses Online Forum To Find Out What People Are Concerned About

In what many would say is an odd action by a government with a reputation for not treating it’s citizens particularly well, China has made available through media outlets an online forum to interact with it’s people. Chinese citizens can now voice their public concerns. One of the first revelations to come from this of discussion was finding out what the general populations biggest concerns are. It seems that their number one concern is for housing for low income people. That is yet another way that the situation in China is not really that different than the situations in other countries around the world.

The unspoken part of this is that this appears to be a sign that China is opening up even more in the area of free speech… and they’re using online forums to do it.

Canadian College Threatens Student With Expulsion For Questionable Forum Use

There is a lot of talk about how some students at Ryerson College have used an online forum to “collaborate” on homework. While certain school administrators approve of group learning, they’re also concerned about the appropriateness of students joint collaboration when they should be exhibiting their own work. Now, at Ryerson there is one first year student whose college career hangs in the balance following a hearing on whether he should be expelled. The outcome of this case may affect many students around the world as this appears to be a popular way of studying.

New York Cops Use Online Forum For Bad

Here is the story of a Seneca County Undersheriff who directed officers beneath him to attempt to arrest or cite people who had posted negative remarks about him and his boss on an online forum.  There are apparently lots of other corruption type issues involving this person as well, but right here is an argument why anonymity may be important to some… to avoid law enforcement retaliation.
