Aggressive Marketing Through Forum Participation

We talked previously about passive marketing through forum participation and how time spent doing a fun activity, like participating in a forum, can pay off from a marketing standpoint. Passive marketing is a great technique in the battle for website traffic, but sometimes you need to take it to the next step.

Aggressive marketing through forum participation is not nearly as scary as it sounds. It is virtually the same as passive marketing but more focused and driven. Where in passive marketing through forum participation you were posting in forums that interested you as a fun distraction from work, aggressive marketing through forum participation is work itself.

Simply put, you need to identify forums whose members would make desirable traffic to your website. The forum itself could be covering the same subject as your site, or it could just attract users that would also find interest in what you have on your site.

You then need to establish a presence on these forums. This means that you will need to register and input your website address in either the signature file or profile, whichever the forum allows. Be careful, most forums don’t allow direct affiliate links in these places, so you’ll want to place links that direct to your website. What you do with the traffic once it gets to your site is up to you.

Now for the activity, you will need to post questions looking for guidance from the members of the forum you have chosen. Do not spam the forum with offers as this is not effective and you will not be thought of in very good terms. Ask questions, answer questions, provide insight, be an all-around good participant of the forum. You will want to frequent the forum at least twice a week for good results, this will instill confidence in you as a fellow regular member. With each posting you make, there will be an opportunity for a forum member to click a link to your website and hopefully convert into a customer for you.

The more forums you do this with the better the results will be. Don’t stop at just one forum, be a participant in three, five, seven, or more. Your questions and responses don’t have to be huge in length, but make them have some importance. If it makes it easier you could setup regular days that you participate in forums, say Monday nights and Thursday nights are your forum participation nights. A half hour each night, compounded by eight or more weeks in a row will do wonders to your traffic stats.

A few things to avoid:

Avoid forums with low membership. You want your links to your site seen by the most people possible.

Avoid forums with stale posting intervals. If it’s been months since the last post, that isn’t a good sign as far as how active the community is.

Avoid spamming or coming off too much like a salesman. This will not instill the trust that is needed to make members feel you are one of them.

Aggressive marketing through forum participation still has some elements of fun to it, but it is more focused as a marketing endeavor. The payoffs to this strategy are real, not imagined. Let it be one more weapon in your online marketing arsenal.

A fun way to promote your website or offer

Contrary to what many people in the brick and mortar world think, web development and internet marketing takes a lot of time and can be a lot of work. This line of work offers many benefits as far as work from home opportunities and personal freedom, but it can also be rather time consuming. After spending time working, whether at a nine-to-five job or promoting your online business, we all need to relax a little bit and find a diversion. That diversion can be playing some free online video games, browsing through pictures of a beautiful area, or any number of other internet pastimes. One fun social online activity you can do during these downtimes that can also be a benefit to your website or online project is participating in a forum.

Forums are a great way to connect socially with others who, oftentimes, we have a lot in common with. The interaction, the ongoing conversations, the sometimes off-the-wall or controversial subject matter are all great stress relievers. Once you register for a forum there are usually options as far as filling out your personal profile. In this profile it is not uncommon for there to be an acceptable place to put a link to your website. Now, when people read your posts and want to know more about you they can click on your profile, in there they will see a link to your website. See how easy it is to do passive marketing through the fun activity of participating in forums? Some forums make it even better by providing what is called a signature line. You can then add your website address to your signature and it will appear at the bottom of every single post you make. Now people no longer have to make the move from your post to your profile to see your link, they can just click it right there in your post. Be careful, most forums don’t allow straight affiliate links in the signature line, but you can always link to your website and have a link there to your affiliate line.

So, next time you’re burnt out or need a break just register for and participate in an active forum. Provide a link for people to click in your profile or signature and then while you’re having fun posting remarks and participating in conversations, you’re also marketing your website address to anyone else who participates in that forum. Passive marketing through forum participation can be a valuable tool for both increasing your traffic as well as keeping your sanity.

Now that we’ve covered passive marketing through forum participation, let’s take a look at aggressive marketing through forum participation.

Internet Forums -Â Six Ways To Avoid Disaster
By Elaine Currie

Internet Forums are highly popular, they cater for all tastes and deal with every topic imaginable. People visit Internet forums for a variety of reasons, the most common being the search for information or entertainment.  The Internet forum is a safe environment if you behave sensibly but you can find yourself in dangerous territory if you ignore the following warnings.

Don’t Join Internet Forum Flame Wars

An Internet Forum flame war is to be avoided at all costs. The airing of differing points of view, debate and discussion are healthy things for an Internet forum: they keep it lively. An Internet forum flame war can make entertaining reading but don’t be tempted to join in or start one. If you make a habit of leaping into forum flame wars, you will acquire a reputation as a trouble-maker and you could find yourself barred from a forum because of your behaviour. Another good reason for avoiding forum flame wars is that you could find yourself caught in the crossfire. Before you know it, people will be firing at you from every direction when all you intended to do was have a bit of fun.

Don’t Make Jokes On An Internet Forum

Well, you can if you really must, but remember that the Internet forum has the same drawback as email: the reader can’t see your expression or gestures. The smile, shrug or grimace which can lift your comment from serious to humorous will be missing and your message will be something which the reader has to interpret. If the reader gets it wrong, you might very well find that you just started your very own Internet forum flame war quite unintentionally. You can safely tell a joke on a forum (provided that your joke’s content is appropriate) but sarcasm and irony are dangerous and best avoided.

Don’t Be An Internet Forum Drama Queen

The Internet forum is not a suitable stage for you to perform your very own drama. If you flounce about making extravagant statements merely for effect, you will be the object of ridicule by other forum members even if nobody tells you so. If you are a member of a support forum for a particular programme, it is quite in order to post a message to the forum saying something along the lines of “I’ve started to feel unsure about [whatever], I don’t think it’s going to work out unless I make some changes. Can anybody suggest what I should try next?” Compare this to the next post in drama queen style: “I quit! This Sucks. I’ve done everything right so it must be this ****ing programme. You will never hear from me again!” Which forum member would you want to help? There will be kind people who feel the drama queen’s pain and offer support and suggestions. When the drama queen makes a big re-entrance to the forum after a few days sulking, posts “I’m back!” and expresses a resolve to work diligently towards success, the kind people who offered support will feel that their advice must have done the trick. When the forum drama queen posts another “Goodbye Forever!” message, the same kind people will empathise as the drama queen is obviously being affected by an emotional roller coaster and they will offer further sound advice. The kind forum members will be pleased when the drama queen makes a further “I’m Back And Here To Stay!” recovery. By about the third or fourth “I Quit!” drama, even the kindest people will be wishing the drama queen had stayed quit the first time round and Internet forum credibility for the drama queen ends there.

Don’t Be An Internet Forum Puppy

A real puppy can’t help chasing after everything that moves, getting under people’s feet and being hyperactive to the point where it sometimes becomes annoying: that’s just its nature. The Internet forum member who behaves like a puppy can help it and should desist. I am talking about the person who joins an Internet forum for the sole purpose of getting the links in his signature file on the forum as often as possible. The annoying forum puppy will respond to every message posted whether he knows anything about the subject or not. He will post messages which are of no value to anyone, these messages will range from boring pointless observations to obscure drivel to requests to poll an unimportant question which bears no relevance to the forum. If you are desperate to plaster your signature file all over the place, join lots of Internet forums and just post a few messages on each. With any luck, you will grow out of this time-wasting pursuit before the other forum members form a lynching party.

Don’t Be An Internet Forum Seconder

Have you ever come across Mr Me Too? If you have, you will know who I mean. He is about as annoying as the Internet forum puppy. Mr Me Too will post a response to every thread that appears on a forum. It won’t take him long as he won’t bother to read through the thread, all he will do is add a comment saying “me too” or “I agree”. This gets his signature file posted with the link back to his website and that’s all he wants. Mr Me Too does not go to the Internet forum for entertainment or information or to contribute anything useful. If you are subscribed to a forum thread and receive notification that someone has posted a further message on the topic, it is very irritating to log in at the forum only to find that someone has posted a message saying “me too” or “I agree” just to give his signature file an airing. It is sadly true that the Internet forum puppy and Mr Me Too will get their links on the Internet alongside the forum members who post meaningful messages. When the day arrives that Search Engine Robots are able to distinguish the difference between valuable forum messages and drivel, those two offenders will find that it’s pay back time for their transgressions.

Don’t Attack The Internet Forum Moderators

If you have a message removed or edited by an Internet forum moderator, there will be a reason, so don’t post complaints on the forum. Even if you don’t understand or don’t agree with the decision, there is no point in arguing. Attacking a moderator is like holding up a placard saying “I’m a pest, throw me out”. The moderators are there to ensure the Internet forum is kept to the required standard. Remember that somebody owns this forum and invests time and energy in keeping the environment — well — moderate. The Internet forum is not your private sand-pit, you are a guest and if your behaviour is not appropriate, your invitation to play could be withdrawn. You should also remember that anything you post on an Internet forum will be available for public scrutiny for years to come.

The dictionary definition of the verb to moderate is: “to keep within measure or bounds; to regulate; to reduce in intensity; to make temperate or reasonable”. If this does not sound like your kind of environment, perhaps you should stay away from Internet forums.

Forum Marketing Secrets
By Mark A. Abrahams

Forum marketing can be a very profitable exercise when you
start your internet business. Use forum marketing to drive
high quality visitors to your website for free. Once you
are making money you can reinvest the profits into paid
marketing like ezines and ppc. The significant factor with
forum marketing is that you need to do your research on
which forums to post regularly on. Target the wrong forums
and your efforts could be in vain. You need to find forums
directly related to your product or service. So for example
if you sell internet marketing products then target
internet marketing forums like the Warriors forum.

The key factor with making forum marketing work is that you
need to establish credibility and get the other forum
visitors to trust you first. Avoid posts that are like spam
where you post only to try and get the forum visitors to
visit your website. Post regularly and answer posts with
insight. Over time you will establish your reputation and
forum visitors will trust you and follow your
recommendations and signature links.

When you join a forum there usually is a signature that you
have to fill out. This signature is crucial for your
success as every time you post you will have the chance of
a visitor being able to visit your website. Make sure that
you spend a lot of time initially to create a powerful
signature. Often they will allow you to use html here and
make sure that your signature has your unique selling
proposition that will make the forum visitors want to click
through to your website.

Having links from different forums will definitely boost
your search engine rankings. Post on different forums and
make sure to include your anchor text for your different
targeted keywords in your signature. Using this method of
forum marketing you will drive targeted visitors from the
forums and also increase your targeted visitors from search
engines.

The most popular forum sites are focused on technology. These types of sites include several Linux forums as well as an Adobe and Java. Other popular forum sites include game sites and home/hobby sites that cover topics like gardening and photography. All the forum sites listed are high quality sites, in that they are well monitored and do not contain spam posts.
Forum Marketing-How to Use and Not Use Forums to Drive Traffic to Your Web Site
By Sean Ray

The tens of thousands of internet “forums” that attract users who have common interests have recently become of interest to marketers – particularly niche marketers. There are forums for every imaginable topic. To see an example of the specialized nature of forums, look at www.big-boards.com. To be sure they represent a potent marketing opportunity and medium. But they can also be a negative force in marketing if used incorrectly. So before you invest in forum marketing make sure you understand the milieu.

An internet forum is a discussion room that operates via the internet. In a sense, they are an evolution of the newsgroups and email bulletin boards that were so prevalent ten to fifteen years ago. Topics get put on the collective forum table and discussion ensues via “posts” to the forum – essential via messages that get posted for everyone to see. Today, you can also consider chat rooms and interactive blogs as a style of forum.

There are two general styles of forum: moderated and unmoderated. Most long-lasting forums are moderated. That is, that all posts are reviewed by a “moderator” before being made public. In this way, the forum protects itself from undesirable spam, crazy people, and profane, obscene, or off-topic material. Unmoderate forums are just that, unmoderated.

Most forums have rules that govern the content that is acceptable to the forum. Violating these rules will draw the contempt of the entire forum. There is no better way to shoot yourself in the foot than to have your forum marketing efforts earn the disdain of the entire forum membership! In newsgroup days, this was called “flaming” (as in ‘shot down in flames’).

On the other hand, if used carefully, forum marketing can be a great way to boost website traffic. Many forums while banning overt advertising or self-serving posts, do not mind a little appropriate discussion or referencing of products, services or features. Many forums also do allow the author to include a link to their own site.

To make sure you don’t run afoul of forum policy be sure to check out their rules, avoid overt selling (forum members are very sensitive to even subtle selling), and make sure that your posts offer good reasons to refer to off-forum content in your site.

Jump-starting Your Forum Community
By Dax Christopher

Forums are an excellent addition to a website to attract visitors to interact with the site and to return to the website freqeuently. While there are many other website additions that can retain visitors and have them coming back for more, forums are perhaps the most engaging for visitors to your website and offer the most benefits to both the website’s owner and the visitor.

Unfortunately, having a forum addition to a website does not guarantee its success and usefulness in gathering the hypothesized attention and attractiveness. A new forum with no content, no members or no active discussion is like an empty hall. Anyone who steps into such an empty room would most definitely get the creeps and run away as fast as they can. Similarly, your forum can quickly lose its purported usefulness if it is empty and bare.

Starting and building an active forum on your website is no mean feat. It requires a lot of time, patience, and hard-work. Why is that so? Well, there are several important factors that scares away visitors and you have to remove these factors in order to convince visitors to stay, read, and then post and join in the discussions. If there are no discussions in the first place, no one would be around to discuss! It is exactly a chicken and egg question that you have to answer. There are several methods to overcome these issues and to get content/discussions started on your forum.

1. Write good content and request feedback

Having good content draws visitors to read and if they have questions or concerns, they can always find a link to discuss it on your forum. Make sure you provide them a link and the outlet to voice out on your forums. The hard part is in writing quality content on your site.

2. Offer free incentives

Some forums offer active members special advertising opportunities such as banners or text links on the website and in the forums. Members are then encouraged to start threads and post and participate in order to obtain free advertising. Other than free advertising, you might want to consider giving away a free copy of your product to the top poster or hold a lucky draw for active posters. Nothing beats promotion than free products and competition. On my webmaster community (www.buildtolearn.com), I provide free cpanel web hosting for members who have accumulated 50 posts. This incentive has been in use for the past 2 years and our community now has close to 10,000 members!

3. Exchange posts with other forums

There are many other new forums started on the net everyday and you could work together with other websites to generate content on your forums. It is a ‘I’ll post in yours and you post in mine’ exchange where both webmasters participate in each others forums in order to get the ball rolling in the forums. This exchange makes it more interesting for both parties.

4. Pay for posts

If you have deep pockets or have a budget from your website, you can always get people to come to your forum and start discussions. Quality checks are in order to ensure that your ‘free-lance posters’ are not simply submitting 3 word posts or copying posts from other forums.

5. Talk to yourself

If all else fails, due to low budget or having nothing else to offer, you can create ‘virtual copies’ of yourself and start discussions with yourself. To new visitors to your forum, they see an active community and discussions, which helps them overcome the inertia. Once you have a handful of active members talking, you can stop talking to yourself and let your community grow itself!

The above are just some tips that I have gathered from participating in forums and from building forum communities on the net for the past 2 years. The tough part in setting up a forum is in the initial stage. Once you have overcome that hurdle, it gets easier for the forum to grow and mature.

Sploggers Ruining the Internet Forums
By Lance Winslow

It is so unfortunate that Forums and Blogs require so much security these days to prevent people from splogging? Splogging is posting things like Viagra ads on Internet Forums and Blogs. In addition to the security that must be put into place to prevent this rules are also often accompanied as people apply to participate online. Many folks choose not to participate due to Identity Theft and even use fake names when posting.

Yes very interesting indeed and thus we are getting to the very heart of the subject. It is the Sploggers, Spammers and such that cause most of the rules on the most important Blogs and Forums on the Internet, regardless of the Industry sub-sector. It simply does not make sense for the Internet Forum Operators to allow a hacker in Eastern Europe or a Splogger in metro-China to wreck what they have going there, as the communication process is disrupted.

With regard to a Splogger on a Think Tank forum with 8,000 posts it is nearly impossible to keep them off without the barriers to entry, thus rules are made and this slows the creative process and communication interaction. Talk about “ruining the experience for everyone” yes true, but think about a think tank which is working to solve the problems of the Planet and Human Civilizations.

What if we miss a discovery, what if someone gets shut out and cannot participate. Everyone loses big time in that case. A participant may have held a clue to the puzzle on Malaria, safely removing Landmines, a new Alternative Energy, crossing the digital divide, stopping international terrorism,

preventing auto accidents, protecting a nation or any number of human challenges. Yes, it truly sucks.

Thus Internet Forum Operators make rules to attempt to shore up the flood of malcontents attacking the system, yet in the end we cause a slowing of innovation. I just cannot accept that. So we press on! Forum guidelines are indeed one way to put folks on notice and the code system for posting is good idea too. It’s a start. It is just unfortunate that humans do not understand what a valuable resource the Internet is and how everyone is hurt when folks abuse it. Perhaps this will propel thought in 2007.

forum

1: a public meeting or assembly for open discussion

2: a public facility to meet for open discussion

3: a place of assembly for the people in ancient Greece.

Search “forums” on Google and there are over 2 billion web pages. On Overture, you can come up with tons of searches. New forums are sprouting every day. Some forums are way more active than others. Forums help us to connect the way we used to connect at work, play and other social events.

Forums are used as a tool to promote your business. Whether it be a chat forum, business forum, political forum, people use there signature at the end of there posts to lure people to check out there business or future promote their ideas. There is big business in being active in the right forums. A forum membership is more valuable than all the Internet marketing eBooks, training programs and membership sites you could ever join. In fact, most of the people publishing Internet marketing eBooks, training programs and membership sites are active forum members. If you plan to be a successful Internet marketer, there is no better place in the world for you to hang out than the forums.

Almost every marketing guru has their own forum to promote there status and grow there list of potential customers. When you connect with them several times in the forums then there is a certain amount of trust and respect built up. Now it is easier to promote another product or idea to you. A forum is a place to share ideas, find answers, make friends and develop partnerships. The forum is an organic, always growing, support resource for your entire Internet marketing business.

Forums are also a way to give back to the community of people who helped you. There is always someone more knowledgeable than you, but there is also someone who is in need just as you were. For the forum to work, giving back is just as vital as taking.

Forums are a great tool. Use them. But just like anything else on the internet, use caution. Forums are here to provide another form of information to us. For every niche or need, there is a forum.
